I am writing this blog post when we are in the midsts of the COVID-19 panic buying stage. If you step into a supermarket just now, you will see that the shelves of pasta are completely empty. This appeared to be the first thing that everyone was stocking up on, and as a result there is none left.
So, this sparked my blog post as making your own pasta is super easy, has only three ingredients (which you probably already have in your store cupboard pre the stocking up frenzy), and it’s cheap to make – so, win win all round!
Some pasta recipes use eggs, but I am plant-based so my recipe doesn’t include any.
Here’s a list of the ingredients:-
Flour – the best that you can buy – a finely milled, semolina pasta flour is recommended, but standard flour is good too.
Water – no fancy stuff here, straight from the tap is fine
Salt – a pinch of, just enough to add taste
Method:
Sieve the flour and add to a bowl
Add in a generous pinch of salt
Make a well in the centre and add water, enough that when you knead it, it becomes a ball that is the right consistency to roll with a rolling pin
Flour your surface and roll the mixture out with a rolling pin, or put it through a pasta machine, until it is thin
Cut into strips (to resemble tagliatelle), or make small balls (the size of a penny) and push in with your thumb to make a dent in the middle.
Cooking instructions:
Add your homemade pasta to boiling water and cook until it floats to the top.
See, I told you it was simple. It’s quick to make, and you can pat yourself on your own back for dishing up homemade pasta, and feel a bit proud of yourself for doing so!
Happy cooking!
